ABC: Bible Meditation for Me! Q Is for Quiet!

ABC Bible Meditation for Me!  Q Is for Quiet!

ABC Bible Meditation for Me!: Bible Meditation Vs. Eastern Meditation

Introduction:  This is a lesson in a twenty-six part ABC series focusing on lessons designed for parents, grandparents, teachers, and kids.  Please share this lesson, for it has some very important thoughts on the often misused verse Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God!"

Q Is for a Quiet Place

Q is for a quiet place
just over yonder,
Where God's word
I can read, and then
ponder!

Morning Watch at Camp Cherith

When I was a young girl I went to camp.   Each morning near our cabin we picked a quiet place to have Morning Watch.  There we used our Bibles to fill in a little book that helped us think about what we had read.  Do you have a quiet place where you can go to read your Bible, meditate, and pray?  I hope so!

A Solitary Place

Jesus went to a solitary place to get alone.  What did Jesus do there?  He prayed to his heavenly Father.  Read about it in Mark 1:29-38.

The Be Still Verse

There is a verse in Psalm 46:10 people quote all the time, and they put it on posters on their walls.  It seems to be everywhere.  People use it to try to tell us that God wants us to get all quiet and still.  Then we are to say a word or words to clear the mind and do "centering prayer."*  There's just one problem.  That is not what that verse means.  Nothing in the Bible tells us to meditate like that.  Read "the whole Psalm" to understand.

*  A type of meditation being promoted in many churches under the guise of prayer. (Ray Yungen,  A Time of Departing, p.202)

Here's a poem to explain more.

From Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength-
a very present help in trouble;
I will not fear for God is near.
      God reigns supreme-
        a Ps. 46 theme!
Don't panic, be still for God will
be exalted among the nations,
God will be exalted on the earth.
Therefore, we must trust
for the LORD of hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our refuge!

A Meditation Recitation

Psalm 4:4  "Stand in awe, and sin not; commune* with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.  Selah."
*  Means to meditate on or think within your heart.

The Eastern Way

Sometimes I See

Sometimes I see
people meditating
on my TV
with closed eyes
trying to visualize,
trying to stop
their thoughts,
with mudra fingers
on their knees,
and I am sad to see
them, for I know it's
not the Bible way
to meditate or pray!
                          LEP

Question:  Have you seen people meditating on TV sitting with crossed legs in the lotus pose?  Remember that is not God's way to meditate, it is man's way.

Charlotte and the Quiet Place

Charlotte and the Quiet Place by Deborah Sosin is a mindfulness picture book that tells of a girl whose house, neighborhood, school, and city were all so noisy.  One day Charlotte just happened to chase her dog under a tree in a park where she sat down.  Everything was so quiet.  Right away Charlotte began to meditate.  She began to go to a quiet place inside her, the book author says, and make up pictures in her mind.  Charlotte was visualizing.  Is this the Bible way?  Which way was it?  Why?

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me! R Is for Rumination

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me!  R Is for Rumination

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me: Bible Meditation Vs. Eastern Meditation

Introduction: This is a lesson in a twenty-six part series created for parents, grandparent, teachers, and kids.  Please share these lessons with homeschoolers, Sunday School, and Children's Church leaders.

R Is for Rumination

R is for rumination
that uses reflection
to think things over
with much introspection.

Bible Meditation Rumination Recitation

Psalm 139:17  "How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God!  how great is the sum of them!"

In your Bible place little "+" signs round the verse to make you think about how many precious and wonderful thoughts the Lord gives us out of his word.  How precious and how great are these thoughts!  Read verse 18 too!

A Bible Meditator Puts on His Thinking Cap

Someone who loves God's word puts on his "thinking cap" when he reads it and gives heed to it.  Whereas, other meditators try to take off their "thinking caps."

Words Related to Rumination

Type a page full of the following words: think, meditate, meditation, reflect, reflection, muse, contemplate, contemplation, heed, study, regard, attend, attention, understand and so on.  Print several copies.  Use to make a rumination poster, or back a bulletin board.  When you display, or write a verse on them use a different font and a brighter color so the words show up.

Ms. Jean-- A Real Ruminant!

Ms. Jean was a special friend.  She just loved to ruminate on and talk about scripture.  She loved to memorize it too.  Ms. Jean had a goal--to memorize Psalm 119 with its one hundred and seventy-six verses.  I loved to talk with Ms. Jean and have her pray for me too.

Just "Like a Cow" Rumination

Cows like to chew grass, then spit it up and rechew it several times before finally swallowing it.  So we too must do the same by chewing on or reflecting on a verse over and over.  That's how to do "just like a cow" rumination!  Try it!

Biblical  "Cud" Verses

Did you know there is a scripture about animals like a cow that chew the cud?   Find them in:   Leviticus 11:2,3

"Just Like a Cow" Bible Marker

Cut out a green marker sized paper strip. Fringe its top like grass.  On one side write: "R U a Ruminant?"  On the reverse side write the verse you are ruminating on.  Then ruminate regularly.

Eastern Meditation

Unlike rumination, Eastern meditation requires letting go of thoughts and ignoring them. It makes your mind fuzzy and half asleep.  It can become trance-like.  Don't use it!

Empty Mind, Filled Mind

The Buddhist way is to rid one of ruminations--anything past and anything in the future.  Then, they say, think on the present.  However, God tells us lots of things to remember from the past and lots of things to know about the future.  So ruminate the Bible way and don't run on empty!

Mindfulness Message:  Don't Overthink or Ruminate!

In an article "Mindfulness Grounding Exercises" from Mindfulness4U a writer says "Signs that we are ungrounded are: "we over-think or ruminate!"  It lists other things as well.  Note that this is totally opposite of Bible meditation.

Suggestions for Parents:

Sample Bible Meditation Sequence

Goals: to help kids to become familiar with their Bibles, to locate meditation verses, to understand
Bible meditation, to use it in prayer or song, to create a craft using verse, to memorize it, and to apply it.  For use with: one child, a small group, or whole class; or use for devotions, homeschooling, Sunday School, camps, Bible clubs and so on. Needed: Bible, highlighter, pencil, items for marker or other craft.

Bible Verse Meditation Sequence:
1. Select it.     2. Find it in Bible.     3. Highlight it.     4. Read it aloud.     5. Think it over; share it.     6. Pray it.     7. Rethink it; share it.     8. Make it; put in Bible.     9. Memorize it.
10. Apply it.

Sample conversation:  "Today we'll meditate on Ps.139:17.  Let's find it in our Bibles.  (Help if needed.)  We'll use our highlighter to highlight it like this.  (Demonstrate.)  Read aloud together.  Think about it.  What did you notice?  (Allow time to share.)  We can pray the verse like this:  "Dear Lord, thank you that your word says, "How precious …. of them."  Let's ruminate on it one more time.  Does anyone have a different thought?  (Make a "R U a Ruminant?" marker)   Find the verse again, and put your marker on that page.  (Help if needed.)  I hope this week you'll look in your Bible to read your verse, use your verse, and memorize it too."

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me! V Is for Verses & Visualization

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me! V Is for Verses and Visualization

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me!  Bible Meditation Vs. Eastern Meditation

Introduction:  This is a lesson in a twenty-six part series created for parents, grandparents, teachers, and kids.  Each lesson will focus on biblical and nonbiblical meditation.

V Is for Bible Verses

V is for Bible verses
You need to heed.
V is for Bible verses
You need to read--
to think about them!

Think About the "Think on These Things" Verse

Think about the "Think on These Things" verse in Philippians 4:8 which reads, "...  Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Dee D.'s Bible Verse Advice

Dee D. always had a Bible verse or two to share.  And one of her favorites was: "The Think on These Things" verse from Philippians 4:8.  Dee's advice was if there are troublesome things you can't stop dwelling on, think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. Say, did you notice Dee suggested thinking about a Bible verse or meditating on it? She didn't say do mindfulness meditation or guided visualization meditation to calm or relax you. Instead she suggested "Bible" meditation.

The "T.O.T.T." Bible Verse Marker

T.O.T.T. stands for "Think on These Things!  Make a marker.  On one side copy the verse, and on the reverse side write: "T.O.T.T."  Fringe the top and bottom of the marker.  Oh, and don't forget to think a lot about this verse!

The "T.O.T.T." Pop-up Poster

Make a poster; print the verse on it.  Cut around sides and top of the words: true, honest, just, pure, lovely, good report, and think on these things.  Leave the words and phrase attached at the bottom so the words can be popped out.  Hang it up.

Ten Psalm 119 Verses to Rehearse

Here are ten verses from Psalm 119 in rhyme to learn and to think on.  If you wish, print them and glue each one on a page of a tiny book.  Notice the first part rhymes with the scripture verse at the end.

A verse to ponder:  "... O let me not wander from thy commandments." (Ps. 119:10)
A verse to write:  "... I delight in thy law." (Ps. 119:70)
A verse of contemplation:  "... thy testimonies are my meditation."  (Ps.119:99)
A verse to repeat:  "How sweet are thy words to my taste."  (Ps.119:103)
A verse to say: "I hate every false way."  (Ps. 119:104)
A verse to recall: "I esteem all thy precepts."  (Ps.119: 128)
A verse to recite: "The entrance of thy words giveth light."  (Ps.119:130)
A verse for you: "Thy word is true from the beginning." (Ps.119:160)
A verse to voice:  "I rejoice at thy word."  (Ps. 119:162)
A verse to rehearse:  "I have kept thy precepts." (Ps.119:168)

The Eastern Way

V Is for Guided Visualization

V is for guided visualization,
a technique where someone seeks
to tell you what to do with your mind.

Guided Visualization Meditation

When a boy or girl gets stressed, they are asked to lie or sit still, close their eyes, calm their body, and breathe various ways as one listens to a podcast or voice (parent, teacher) telling you just what to think in your mind.  But is this the Bible way?  No, not at all.  It is a false way.  For God's way uses His Word to help us calm down and focus, rather than someone telling us what to do with our body, breath, and mind.

Parental Suggestions:

Be Alert to Bedtime/Naptime Guided Meditations!

Guided visualization scripts are often used before naptime or bedtime.  Be especially aware of this should your child or grandchild be enrolled in any kind of a PreK or K program (even a church program!) that includes a rest time.  Always ask what is done to get the children to settle down.
Steer clear of programs where the teacher uses the internet via a smart board, for example, and randomly chooses video visualizations that seem soothing.

Listen to Dr. Becky Bailey's (Conscious Discipline Founder) Meditation Script!

Dr. Becky Bailey's "Safe and Calm Meditation" (The Learning Station) done in Bailey's mesmerizing voice instructs children how to quiet and calm their bodies and minds.  Listen to it twice!!  Can you discern its deceptions?*  Click here:

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me! X Is for X-tra and X-out!

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me!  X Is for X-tra and X-out!

ABC Bible Meditation for Me:  Bible Meditation Vs. Eastern Meditation

X Is for X-tra and X-out!

Introduction:  This is a lesson in a twenty-six part series created for parents, grandparents, teachers, and kids.  Each lesson will focus on both Biblical and nonbiblical meditation.

X Is for X-tra and X-out

X is for X-tra or add on to,
'n' X-out is for subtract from
to make God's word new.

Don't Add or Subtract from God's Word!

X marks the spot or scriptures: Deuteronomy 4:2, Deuteronomy 12:32, Proverbs 30:6, and Revelation 22:18,19 where God warns us not to add to or take away from his word.  Three verses tell us not to add or subtract from the Bible while just one talks about adding to it.  Do you know which is which?  When you find these verses highlight them, and mark each one with a plus sign, a minus sign, or both.

Some Say We Don't Need Part of Our Bible

Some say we don't need the Old Testament in our Bibles.  They suggest we just "X" it out.  But God says don't do that, for as Romans 15:5 says, "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, …."

A Pastor Adds and Subtracts from the Bible

A pastor wrote a 'Bible' that he changed around a lot.  He even had messages in it that were not Bible truths at all.  He didn't obey the verses about not adding or subtracting from it.  He called it THE MESSAGE.  Sad to say it had many false messages in it.

Some Priests Made The Inclusive Bible

Some priests made a Bible that doesn't have certain words like "him, her, she, he" or others in it.  They changed it by adding and subtracting from it.

Be Still and Know that I Am God!

Psalm 46:10 is a verse everyone uses to say Christians should get still, listen in silence, and then hear God speaking to them.  Because they don't read the rest of the Psalm they don't stop and think about its true meaning.  They use the verse to teach meditation that is like Eastern meditation.  They say be real still, close your eyes, and use a mantra word or phrase to stop thoughts.  The question is when one stops his thoughts whose thoughts do you think they might hear?

It would be good for those who misuse this verse to remember a little song:  "I will not forget God's word, that is where His voice is heard."  Instead, they listen to voices in their minds.

The Young King Who Didn't X-out God's Word

Exclude is also a word with an "Xx" sound in it.  It means to shut or keep out.  Now, some people do this with the Bible.  They just forget it and don't ever read it.  It is as if it doesn't exist.  II Kings 22-23 has an amazing story of young King Josiah that found out the word of God had been taken out of its place in the temple.  It had been lost.  But when Hilkiah found it, right away King Josiah had it put back where it belonged, honored, and read once again.

Psalm 119:16  A Bible Meditation Recitation to Remember

Psalm 119:16 is an important verse to think about and to remember.  It says:  ""I will delight myself in thy statues: I will not forget thy word."

The Plus, Minus, and X Marker

Cut out a plus sign (+) and minus sign (-) and (x).  Overlapping them just a bit glue onto a colorful marker strip.  Write the four + and - verses on it.  Slip into your Bible.

The Eastern Way

Meditators Change Words

Meditators change words
so people can't tell
practices like mindfulness*
are spiritual as well.

* yoga

Mindfulness Has a Makeover

Mindfulness is based on Zen Buddhism.  To make it seem less religious many have changed it so its Buddhist parts would be hidden or x-ed out!  Jon Kabat-Zinn was someone who did this, so more people would try mindfulness.

Yoga Turns "Christian"

Yoga teachers do the same thing; they insist that yoga isn't full of Hinduism.  But it is.  Even Christians do this by changing yoga words to make it become a Christian practice, but it isn't!

Mindfulness and Yoga Come Into the Public Schools

Once upon a time, every day in public schools there was Bible reading, prayer, an anthem, and flag salute.  But, after awhile this stopped, no one could read the Bible, or pray any more in school.  Now, many years later many schools instead do Buddhist based mindfulness and Hindu saturated yoga each day.  God has been x-ed out!

Parental Suggestions:

Learn More About Mindfulness/Yoga Indoctrination

Dr. Candy Gunther Brown, a professor at Indiana University, wrote a recent book Debating Yoga and Mindfulness in Public SchoolsReforming Secular Education or Reestablishing Religion?  In it Brown carefully documents how mindfulness and yoga are filled with Hindu and Buddhist terms and practices.  This book shows how deceptive many have been in their intense mission to indoctrinate teachers and children.

ABC: Bible Meditation for Me!: Zz is for Zeal

ABC Bible Meditation for Me: Bible Meditation Vs. Eastern Meditation

Zz Is for Zeal, Zealot

Introduction:  This is a sample lesson in a twenty-six part series focusing on lessons designed for parents, grandparents, teachers, and kids.  Each lesson will focus on both biblical, and nonbiblical meditation.

Z Is for Zealot

Z is for zealot,
someone who,
is ardently active,
devoted too.

Z Is for Zeal, P Is for Paul

Z is for zeal, P is for Paul,
who before he met Jesus,
the Bible recalls
went after Christians
to slaughter them all.

Z is for zealot, P is for Paul
who after he met Jesus,
the Bible recalls
began to preach Jesus
to one and to all!

Paul Had Zeal!

Before he met the Lord, Philippians 3:6 tells us that Paul had great zeal to persecute Christians.  Acts tells us he zealously went after all who were of the way (of Jesus) to destroy them.  But, after Paul was saved on the Damascus Road, Paul became very zealous about preaching Jesus with those very same Christians he once hated.  Question:  Can someone be zealous for the wrong cause?   Name some present day zealots.  Discuss this.

The Psalmist's Zeal

In Psalm 119, over and over the Psalmist shows great zeal for the Word of God--or the law, the testimonies, the precepts, the commandments, the statues, and the judgments.  He wrote about this
in Psalm 119:97.

The All the Day Meditation Recitation to Say:

"O how love I thy law!  It is my meditation all the day."

The Psalmist has great love for the word of God or the law.  Notice the exclamation mark.  All day long he thinks about or meditates on God's word.  He is zealous over it.  He also mentions there is something he is zealous against in Ps. 119:104.  He says, "I hate every false way!"

Bible Meditation Marker

Make an oversized "exclamation mark" marker sized to fit in your Bible.  Cut it out.  At the top in dark bold letters write "O how love I" and in the ball at the bottom "thy law!"  Turn it over and write "It is my meditation all the day."   Insert in your Bible.

The Eastern Meditation Way

Thich Nhat Hanh: A Zen Zealot

Zealous for Zen

Thich Nhat Hanh
is a defender of Zen-
a monk that's mentioned
again and again.

Thich Nhat Hanh's Mindfulness Rituals

Thich Nhat Hanh practices mindfulness where one gets still, focusing on their breath or repeated words to clear the mind. To help with this, TNH wrote poem verses called gathas for every moment  from starting of the day to ending it. As one awakens, gets out of bed, meditates, offers incense,
praises Buddha, eats, and so on, one repeats an appropriate gatha for that activity.   TNH feels if a gatha is repeated the meditator will return to himself becoming more aware of every action.  In short, gathas become mantras.  But are these gathas like God's word?  Not at all, for they are but the words of a man.  From TNH's book: Present Moment Wonderful Moment.

Parental Suggestions:

Introduce the Concordance

Introduce your child to the use of a concordance: either at the back of a Bible or on-line.  Look up zeal, zealous, and zealot.  Which did you find?

Research These Zen Zealots

Jon Kabat-Zinn is a Jewish Zen Buddhist zealot.  He is known as being the founder of the mindfulness movement here in the USA.  Kabat-Zinn, by the way, studied under Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.  Also research Father Thomas Merton, a Roman Catholic monk, who had an affinity for Zen Buddhism and meditated with monks in the Far East.  Merton, by the way, met Thich Nhat Hanh too.

The Enneagram: An Enlightening Tool or An Enticing Deception?

The Enneagram: An Enlightening Tool or An Enticing Deception?

Chris Heuertz, in his book The Sacred Enneagram: Finding Your Unique Path to Spiritual Growth, states the Enneagram is a tool for excavating your essence or an enlightening tool to find your way back to yourself.  Surely, this suggestion is but a lure to seduce one to enter into the Enneagram entanglement leading one to unbiblical deceptions.

Exactly what is an Enneagram?  Marcia Montenegro in her excellent article: "The Enneagram GPS: Gnostic Path to Self" defines an Enneagram as: "An increasingly popular tool of personality analysis, … a diagram depicting numbers one through nine, with lines connecting each number to other numbers."

While some maintain the Enneagram has been around for centuries, its history can be traced to various areas and teachers. It's important to note that it has occult and devious origins.*  However, the point of this article will not be to unravel its past use but to expose its present popularity.
http://www.christiananswersforthenewage.org/Articles_Enneagram.html

Some Enneagram Experts

At the very epicenter of the current Enneagram movement is Franciscan priest Father Richard Rohr founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC).  Back in the 70s, it was he who learned it from a Jesuit teacher.  Rohr then shared his Enneagram teaching on ten tapes later writing his now classic book: Discovering the Enneagram: An Ancient Tool for a New Spiritual Journey.  Rohr avows it was the Enneagram that made him well-known.
https://cac.org/richard-rohr/richard-rohr-ofm

Rohr has "disciples" that drink in his every word including: Ian Cron, Suzanne Stabile, Chris and Phileena Heuertz to name four.  Since each of these has written recent Enneagram books or are key presenters or supporters of Enneagram programs, each of these Rohr mentees will be examined.

Who Is Ian Cron?

Episcopal priest Ian Cron is a best-selling author and psychotherapist.  Along with Suzanne Stabile, he wrote the book: The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery. In chapter one "A Curious Theory of Unknown Origins," Cron relates how as a grad student he found Rohr's Enneagram book at a conservative seminary retreat.  Upon showing it to his professor he was told to get rid of it. Cron confided, " … I was a young, impressionable evangelical, and though my gut told me my professor's reaction bordered on paranoid, I followed his advice." (p.14) Although, as Cron wrote, he didn't read the book until later when he was reintroduced to it by his spiritual director Br. Dave.  Upon reading it, he tells how he discussed with Br. Dave his initial reactions to the Enneagram.

As they talked, Cron shared a Thomas Merton quote with him which read, "Sooner or later we must distinguish what we are not and what we are. … We must cast off our false, exterior self like the cheap showy garment it is … We must find our real self, in all its elemental poverty, but also in its grand and very simple dignity created to be the child of God, and capable of loving with something of God's own sincerity and his unselfishness."  (p.18)

Cron recalled how Br. Dave prayed a prayer using Irish John Donohue's poem: "Blessing for Solitude." (p.230)  In the prayer Br. Dave repeated this phrase: "May you learn to see your self with the same delight, pride, and expectation with which God sees you in every moment." (p.19)  Does scripture teach this?  Not at all, for God sees us as sinners in need of a Savior or saved sinners in need of His direction.

Cron mentions "... by overidentifying who we are with our personality we forget or lose touch with our authentic self--the beautiful essence of who we are." (p.23)  Cron continues, "... we have a God … (who) remembers who we are, the person he knit together in our mother's womb, and he wants to help restore us to our authentic selves.  But the Bible tells us otherwise stating in Psalm 51:5: "Behold , I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me."

In summary, Cron a "champion of the Enneagram," and "pioneer in the contemporary Enneagram movement" tells us who he is in his "Manifesto."  He begins with, "Today I will throw my hat into the ring of life."  He continues, "I will stand on my own two feet and live my truth."  Like so many,  Cron will do his own thing and decide his own beliefs.  Once again scripture reminds us that Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me."  A true believer does not get to live his own truth.  Full of I, I, I, at the end Cron declares, "Today I will be my True Self."  Reader, realize that this is where the Enneagram takes you--to find your own true self--this is its goal like the book title says The Road Back to You.

The Enneagram Typology Podcast Episode 14

Ian Cron hosts an Enneagram podcast titled "Typology" for the nine personality types named in an Enneagram circle.  In "Episode 014: Richard Rohr, Finally Getting Over Your 'Self' with the Enneagram Pt.1" Ian interviews Rohr.  In his intro, Cron says of Rohr, "You are the preeminent voice in the pioneering of the Enneagram both in the world of the church and in the world of faith communities … and well beyond it."

To begin, Ian questioned Rohr as to how he came to play such a prominent role in the teaching of the Enneagram.  Rohr responds that it was because he learned it so early (70s) through his spiritual director Fr. Jim O'Brien.  At that time Enneagram teaching was kept within the Jesuit spiritual director world, but once Helen Palmer wrote her book, Rohr says the secret was out.  And thereafter he went on to teach it.

At 11:58, Ian comments there's been a "tidal-wave of interest culturally and in church of personality identity" using the Enneagram.  Ian queries, "What accounts for this?"  Well, responds Rohr, its because we've done such a bad job of teaching Christians their "true identity."  We didn't, he espouses, teach them about their image and its likeness of God.

Rohr goes on to say most "Christians" find their identity in their group or denomination and never understand who they themselves are.  Rohr (This is the crux of this interview!) asserts we don't know our individual "Imago Dei" which cannot be given to us or taken away from us.  This idea levels the "playing field of all humanity" says Rohr.  Distinctions such as black and white, Catholic and Protestant, American and Canadian, or gay and straight do not mean anything.  For the "true gospel," declares Rohr, "must be proclaimed that everything: humans, animals, or materials, is created in the image of a trinitarian and loving God."  Therefore, avows Rohr, that settles all questions.  For then we are all "universal children of God," and thus we are in "union" with all other children of God.   Why?  Because, says Father Rohr and his disciples, we all have the divine and the beautiful in us from the very start.

How contrary to the Biblical gospel that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and that in order to become a child of God we must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.  In Enneagramism we don't have to, for it leads us to know we all, after working through our false self delusions to find our true selves, have always been lovely and good. Thus, there's really no need of a Savior nor his death on the cross.

Who Is Suzanne Stabile?

Suzanne Stabile, Cron's coauthor of the book The Road Back to You, is an internationally recognized Enneagram master, teacher, and author.  Like Cron, Stabile is a great admirer of Father Richard Rohr, and one of Rohr's Enneagram disciples.   After meeting Rohr, Stabile was so enamored with Rohr's Enneagram program, she studied under him consenting not to teach or share the material for five years.

Stabile relates she grew up in a loving Texan home where she attended a United Methodist Church.  Later on she joined the Catholic Church for a time.  Today she is married to Rev. Joseph Stabile who is a former Roman Catholic priest and now a United Methodist pastor.

At present, Stabile has conducted over 500 Enneagram workshops over the past 25 years speaking to all sorts of audiences at colleges, divinity schools, churches, and health centers.  Besides, she's taught at CAC Rohr's contemplative center and even internationally at Assisi with Rohr himself.

In the Houston Chronicle article "Christians Rediscovering Ancient Enneagram" (Oct.8, 2016), Emily McFarlan Miller recorded that the Enneagram, an ancient personality system, had exploded in popularity in Christian circles. Miller met Cron and Stabile, authors of The Road Back to You, at a Chicago Enneagram conference.

Miller wrote that both authors encountered the Enneagram two decades ago through Franciscan priest Richard Rohr's book. Miller noted that Cron, at the time, "thought the Enneagram was 'genius,' and saw nothing in it that conflicted with the gospel."

Miller related Cron found fascinating, at the time of her writing, that even "the (conservative) evangelicals were completely fine with it."   Stabile, Miller said, hoped that "... teaching people to learn about the way they see the world and eight other ways people see the world will encourage compassion."  Stabile told Miller, "Our hope is that the book makes the world a more compassionate, more loving, and more generous place."

Who Is Chris Heuertz?

Chris Heuertz, a Rohr mentee and admirer, is another Enneagram enthusiast.  Huertz, who hails from Omaha, Nebraska, came from a Catholic family that converted to Evangelicalism.  Heuertz's parent's had six children.  According to Jason Byassee in "On the Side of Hope" Heuertz's parents worked seven jobs at one time just to send them to private schools.  Heuertz graduated from an Assembly of God high school and went on to Asbury College (now Asbury University).

Soon after graduation from Asbury, Heuertz joined Word Made Flesh ministry to work with the world's most vulnerable poor.  This was how he landed in Calcutta, India working with Mother Teresa.  Here he was later joined by his wife Phileena where they endeavored to save the world--not individuals.  Ever after their Mother Teresa encounters, they promoted her belief the poor already had Jesus in them, and there was nothing one had to do but give them a dignified death.  Therefore, no salvation gospel message need be shared.

Of the WMF organization Jason Byassee wrote: "Rejecting the idea that missionaries bring salvation and services to benighted poor people, WMF has learned … that the poor are Jesus.  WMF or 'Fleshies' … do not necessarily seek to fix poverty or convert people.  Their first intention is to seek friendship with the poor.  And through that they seek, with their friends, to be converted anew to God."
https://www.faithandleadership.com/side-hope

The Heuertz' social justice work with WMF took them to Cambodia where Heuertz encountered the Enneagram.  Fascinated, Heuertz later would delve into the Enneagram deeply, abandon his WMF community, establish the Gravity Center, and write a book entitled The Sacred Enneagram.

Who Is Phileena Heuertz?

Phileena Bacon Heuertz was two years behind Chris at Asbury College.  Phileena also came from an evangelical family, her father being a Wesleyan Methodist pastor in the town of Beech Grove, Indiana.

While working with WMF, the Heuertzes began their contemplative journey upon meeting Father Thomas Keating of Snowmass, Colorado.  From him they learned "centering prayer."   The more they dipped into this contemplative path the further they separated from their evangelical backgrounds.  Eventually, in 2012, they left the WMF to establish the Gravity Center for Contemplative Activism.

Throwing aside her evangelical Wesleyan past, Phileena converted to Catholicism for she believed its rituals, liturgy, and prayer practices would best enhance her "inner work" to shed her false self and find her true self.

Along the way, they also met Father Richard Rohr, and imbibed deeply from his teaching, and locked arms with him.  Phileena today is on Rohr's CAC board.  Rohr in turn has done the foreword to Phileena's recent book Mindful Silence: The Heart of Christian Contemplation.  (2018-IVP Books)

Chris Heuertz' Book: The Sacred Enneagram (Zondervan, 2017)

In 2017, Christopher L. Heuertz wrote The Sacred Enneagram:  Finding Your Unique Path to Spiritual Growth. (Zondervan).  Its foreword was written by Father Richard Rohr, O.F.M. Rohr writes, "Chris Heuertz, my dear friend and confidante, has gone on his own journey of transformation, I am most happy to recommend his excellent book on the Enneagram to you. In its pages you will find excellent content, many new inisghts, and the compassion that genuine spirituality always provides …  You will not be the same after you read this book." (p.11)  Rohr also is an integral part of the Gravity Center, serving as a founding board member much like Phileena serves on his CAC board.

The afterword is written by Ryan O'Neal  a  singer-song writer of Sleeping At Last.   O'Neal shares that Chris introduced both he and his wife to the Enneagram.  As he became more interested in the Enneagram, he went on to create nine songs written for the nine Enneagram types.  O'Neal opines, "I congratulate you … for having picked up such an important and life-giving book …  Your heart will grow more empathetic toward yourself and others … and I believe you will find it easier … to see God's grace in the nine complex and endlessly beautiful Enneagram types which God so lovingly created."  (pp.237-239)  Notice that O'Neal speaks of the Enneagram as one might speak of the very Word of God.  But, God did not create the Enneagram-- for the Enneagram is nothing but the work of men.

Heuertz' book is divided into three parts having ten chapters in all.  Part III especially unlocks his agenda for the reader marrying the Enneagram to contemplative practices to achieve finding your true self.  Chapter nine: "The Way Home: Mapping the Nine Types with New Ways to Pray"  and chapter ten: "An Invitation to Inner Work: Getting Started in the Contemplative Journey."  At the end Heuertz includes an "EnneaGlossary" which defines various Enneagram terms.

Further Examination of The Sacred Enneagram

Sacred Book?  Sacred Enneagram?  Sacred Map?  Not! For there is but one book that is holy and sacred, and that is the very word of God.  As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us:  "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Scripture Quotations:  A closer examination of the book shows that scripture quoted within its pages comes from The Inclusive Bible, c.2007 by Priests for Equality.  Billed as the first equalitarian translation, a blurb on Amazon Books says "... it is a re-imagining of the scriptures and our relationship to them."  It adds, "... it is a non-sexist way to express the same ancient truths."  The "author" Priests for Equality is a movement of both men and woman that leaves sexism and exclusion behind  for "equality."

Compare Chris' use of John 9:1-3 (IB) to (KJV): "As Jesus walked along, he saw someone who had been blind from birth.  The disciples asked Jesus, "Rabbi, was it this individual's sin that caused the blindness, or that of the parents?"  "Neither," answered Jesus.  "It wasn't because of anyone's sin--not this person's or the parents'  Rather, it was to let God's works shine forth in this person."  (p.55)  Here is the same passage in the KJV: "And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.  And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?  Jesus answer, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."

Rohr and More Rohr:  Father Richard is featured in its foreword, in its pages, and on its back cover.  Most certainly Rohr is and was the most influential mentor mentioned.

True Self:  Of all the words repeated throughout the book, the term "true self" is the most often noted.  For the very core of the book's message is to hammer home that through the Enneagram and contemplative practices one may excavate one's essence or true self finding it virtuous and beloved.

Diagrams, Charts: Throughout the book there are over one hundred diagrams of Enneacircles and Enneacharts.  And there's even more in its "Appendix 2."  Of them all, the one that caught my attention is "Virtue Structure." (p.108)  This "map key" consists of five balls with the top ball labeled on the left "Essential Nature (True Self)" and on the right "Original Virtue."  The bottom ball is labeled "Passion or Fixation" on the left and "Virtue Addictions" on the right.  Of this chart, Heuertz writes, "I … emphasize Virtue because when we do return to our essence … Our Virture is the lingering fragrance of our essential purity; it is what makes each of us beautiful.  ...   Of course, returning to our Virtue is familiar, like a homecoming, because it is who we have always been."  (p.109)

Contemplative Prayers:  In chapter ten, "An Invitation to Inner Work," Heuertz introduces the reader to three prayers one may use "as an onramp to the … Christian contemplative tradition." (p.227-234)  Introduced first is Centering Prayer: "Praying with the Feeling Center." Of its relationship to the Enneagram he states, "Centering prayer … is easily aligned with each specific Enneagram type, but even more it may be among the most effective in confronting the root additions of each of the Enneagram's Intelligence Centers." (pp.228-229)  Second is St. Ignatius of Loyola's "The Examen: Praying with the Head Center."  Last is, "The Welcoming Prayer: Praying with the Instinctive Body Center"  whose creator was Mary Mrozowski.

Further reading reveals that mystic Mrozowski was a Catholic lay contemplative who in 1983 attended the first ever "Centering Prayer" retreat experiment at the Lama Foundation in New Mexico.  It was she who helped found the "Contemplative Outreach Ltd." She was also founder of the "Chrysalis House" which became "an incubator" of contemplative prayer practices especially "Centering Prayer."  She was close to and encouraged by the late Father Thomas Keating.  Notice all three prayers, no where taught in Scripture, were man's creations Centering Prayer: Keating, Pennington, Meninger; The Examen: Ignatius; and The Welcoming Prayer: Mrozowski.

The Gravity Center

To unpack the Heuertz' Gravity: A Center for Contemplative Activism is to know why the Enneagram, and all their teachings are far anything Biblical.  Of  "Gravity," its web page reports, "grounds social change in contemplative spirituality, to do good better."

Its site touts three types of retreats that help cultivate "mindfulness and rest:" Grounding, Deepening, and Enlightening.  In addition Gravity provides "Spiritual Direction" for companionship and guidance for one's journey.  Besides, Gravity offers "Enneagram One-on-One" to dismantle one's illusions about one's self or revelation of one's True Self or Essence.  To top that, there's "Weekly Contemplative Prayer Sits" every Wednesday at 4:00PM CST.
http://gravitycenter.com/home-page/host/about

The site highlights Chris'  "Enneagram Exploratory Workshop" which they claim will help one reveal their best and truest self to help heal a world in need.  Billed for: "... the Enneagram curious to the seasoned enthusiast, The Sacred Enneagram one-day is for anyone who cares about nurturing a deep spirituality rooted in self-awareness."
https://gravitycenter.com/sacredenneagram/

Gravity also lists "Enneagram Experts" with whom appointments may be made.  Just a glance down the list of so-called specialists would raise flags for a discerning Christian.  Here's a description of one--"An Interspiritual Unity minister that believes in innate wholeness, perfection, and divinity of all people--irrespective of one's belief or religion, background or age, race or nationality, gender identification or orientation."

Phileena Heuertz' Book: Mindful Silence (IVP 2018)

Phileena came out with her own book, Mindful Silence: The Heart of Christian Contemplation.  Its foreword, just like her husband's book, was written by Father Richard Rohr, OFM.  Now, this book is not specifically about the Enneagram but she highlights it, and one must remember that for every Enneagram type they are suggesting you use one of Phileena's contemplative practices.  Not only that, this book gives one a window into the world of who Phileena and Chris have become today.

Mindful Silence* has eight chapters bookended with Rohr's foreword and Kirsten Powers' afterword.  The chapters begin with "Sleepwalking" and ends with "Waking Up."  At the start of each chapter Phileena quotes a scripture verse and below a quote from a contemplative master.  Each chapter highlights a specific spiritual teacher or mentor as well as specific prayer practice to explore.

*  Christianese for secular term: "mindfulness."

In "Sleepwalking" she features her mentor teacher Father Thomas Keating.  At the end of the chapter is its "Practice: Be Still." This simple prayer introduces us, admonishes Phileena, to "the posture of letting go", a key to all contemplative practice.  This is the prayer using: "Be still, and know I am God."   This begins by praying the whole phrase, and finally ending with: "Be!"  Incidentally, Phileena says she learned this prayer from Father Richard Rohr.  However, to pray this verse in this way is no where taught in scripture.  Jesus in the Gospels gave us the "Lord's Prayer" to pray prefacing it this way, "After this manner pray ye...."  And it wasn't to take us into stillness! (pp.28-29)

In this chapter she also puts in a plug for the Gravity Center's Enneagram program explaining how "incredibly helpful" the Enneagram is for "spiritual development."  She assures one that using the Enneagram is a crucial part of "expanding consciousness."  She says, "While the Enneagram reveals your personality, it is different from other personality profiles in that is links to your 'childhood wound.'"  She also avows, "The Enneagram is a powerful resource for the contemplative path, for as it deconstructs the false self, it simultaneously reveals your true self." (p.23)

The following chapters: "Withdrawing to Engage, Finding Liberation by Discernment, Discovering Darkness Is Light, Exploring a Deep Well, Dying for Life, and Unknowing to Know," which she labels "touchstones of contemplative spirituality," highlight Thomas Merton, Ignatius of Loyola, John of the Cross, Clare of Assisi, Mother Teresa, and the unknown author of The Cloud of Unknowing. (p.27)  Ending each chapter she describes either breath prayer, the prayer of examen, lectio divina, labyrinth, the welcoming prayer, or centering prayer for readers to investigate. (p.28)
https://gravitycenter.com/mindfulsilence/

"Waking Up," the last chapter, describes Phileena's ongoing search "to live into her divine nature" as she took time for "a hermitage" at the Lama Foundation a spiritual community near Taos, New Mexico.  However, the Lama Foundation is tied to a well-known spiritual teacher and New Age Hindu guru Ram Dass who wrote Be Here Now. For more on Lama and Dass read Phileena's blog:  "'Hermitage Part 4: "What Is the Lama Foundation?'"  Just this blog alone shows how Phileena has delved into numerous devious practices, so far removed from the gospel, that any one listening to or reading either her teaching or her husband's materials should be warned of their deceptions.

Gravity Retreat Showcasing Mirabai Starr's Wild Mercy

While a July 19-21, 2019 Gravity Enlightening Retreat* to be held at The Benedictine Retreat Center in Schuyler, NE, is not about Enneagrams, but about introducing retreatants to mystic and contemplative Mirabai Starr's new book Wild Mercy: Living the Fierce and Tender Mercies of the Woman Mystics it further exposes where contemplative activism has taken Chris and Phileena in their quest to find their "truest selves," or "Godselves."

*Listen to the short (4:30) video "Hearing the Voice of Love" with Phileena here:https://gravitycenter.com/join/retreats/enlightening-retreat/  Scroll down to read about the retreat.

Wild Mercy speaks of women mystics from every religious background -Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, Mary Magadalene, Sophia, the Shekinah, Song of Songs, Rabia, Fatima, Tara, Quan Yin, Kali, and indigenious Mother goddesses.  Upon viewing the list, three words from I Corinthians 10:14 jump out: "Flee from idolatry!"  Incidentally, Chris and Phileena spoke along side of Mirabai Starr at a Richard Rohr 2015 "Conspire Conference" at CAC.  And Phileena writes glowingly of listening to Mirabai and being moved to tears in her blog "Tears and Kale."
http://phileena.com/tears-and-kale/  https://gravitycenter.com/event/february-meditation-workshop/

It's heart breaking that Chris and Phileena, once Evangelical, have slipped so far as to be inviting a mystical teacher such as Mirabai Starr with a book foreword by New Age Carolyn Myss, to a retreat.  This is where contemplative prayer practices can lead.  For Phileena reminds one of author Sue Monk Kidd, a Baptist Sunday School teacher, who after reading Father Thomas Merton and engaging in silence, contemplation, and monastery trips later found herself honoring a Pagan goddess.

In the End:  The Enneagram or The Word of God?

The Enneagram claims to teach one their personality type from Type One: "The Perfectionist" to Type Nine: "The Peacemaker." (The Road Back to You p.7 )  It focuses endlessly on one's self through self-awareness, self-observation, self-motivation, self-knowledge, self-wound, self-this, and self-that.  For as II Timothy 3:2 states, "For men shall be lovers of their own selves." Through the 'Sacred Enneagram' it is said at the end, we'll discover that underneath all our failures of our false selves we'll uncover our essence, that true self enabling us to make our world a better and more compassionate place.

On the other hand, God's view of ourselves is that at our core we are sinners for Romans 3:23 declares, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."  In Jeremiah 17:9 it says, "The heart is deceitful  above all things, and desperately wicked: …."  Therefore, we need to believe not in the power of the Enneagram, but in a Savior who can save us from ourselves and our sins. Scripture says: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9)

In the end, it is through the Word of God, not the Enneagram, where we can find out who we are and what we must do.  In I Corinthians 2:5 Paul tells us: "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."  And as Proverbs 9:10 reminds us, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom …" not the Enneagram!

Fascination with Sloths Segues Into Mindfulness Meditation

Fascination with Sloths Segues into Mindfulness Meditation

It's a fact that the sloth is so adored zoos are having a hard time finding enough of them for all of the would-be onlookers. It seems many are all agog over sloths.  Zoo keepers have found that some zoo patrons are so in awe of the sloth that they break down into tears when they first see a live one.
Indeed, poachers too are having a field day supplying these wanted mammals to their customers.
https://wsimag.com/culture/19651-sloth-onslaught
https://www.wsj.com/articles/zoos-are-clambering-to-give-the-people-what-they-want-more-sloths-1503070126

A quick read about sloths informs one that these amazing creatures of the rain forest have been created to be ever so slow to move, and prefer to sleep hours on end every day.  Not only do they move slowly, eat slowly, but they do almost everything upside down happily hanging from their high perch. To many this serene slow-to-move mammal mirrors the mindfulness techniques of being still, peaceful, and letting the world pass by.

So popular are sloths you'll find book stores offering a variety of items pertaining to them: journals, stickers, stationery, tee-shirts, Christmas cards, stuffed sloths, throws, book bags, jewelry, calendars, and the list goes on.  Even Hollywood got in on the sloth obsession with Sid the Sloth in "Ice Age," and the slow sloth employees of the DMV in "Zootopia."

Noticing this sloth fascination I wondered could it be these animals are used for meditation?  Just a bit of research and yes, I found this special animal that God made to be very slow, and unique in its ways is being turned right side up to assume a meditative sitting position to lure kids and adults alike into meditation.

Who could miss the Budda-like sloths with closed eyes sitting in a lotus-cross-legged position atop a book store shelf?  I could not!.  How clever!  Just arrange the long sloth legs cross wise, and the toed claw "fingers" into mudras and you have meditating sloths. The enemy, the devil, knows exactly how to take an animal such as a sloth and literally turn it into something opposite of what God intended as Isaiah 5:20 warns.

Author Ton Mak wrote A Sloth's Guide to Mindfulness (July 2018),  a cartoon-like deceptive book, one can use to learn how to meditate.  Amazon's introductory blurb to the book says, "Follow a serene and smilely sloth through a series of light meditations … with this snuggable guide."  Of his book Mak writes, "This little book encourages a slower pace--a more mindful, philoslothical life."
https://www.amazon.com/Sloths-Guide-Mindfulness-Ton-Mak/dp/1452169462

Another book, A Sloth's Guide to Taking It Easy (2018), by Sarah Jackson introduces children to "Brian," a three-toed sloth, as "... the perfect mentor on your journey to stepping back and slowing life down."  "Brian" will take you on your way to some "serious chilling" i.e. meditative techniques, and will become your relaxation guru.

To help you along Jackson suggests reciting "Positivity Mantras" consisting of three things you like about yourself.  After, one holds up a mirror, and recites aloud each mantra ten times while looking at one's self.  However, Proverbs 3:5-7 tells us not to elevate ourselves but to: "Trust in the Lord with all our hearts, and lean not to our own understanding" … and "not to be wise in our own eyes."

Seductively cute color books too use sloths, color books such as The Sloth Mandala Coloring Book for Kids, and Slothdala: Relax with Sloth and Mandala Design.  (2017)  The first color book cover pictures a smiling sloth hanging from a branch attached to a mandala.  The mandala's green focal point is very visible inviting one into fixing one's gaze on it, and entering into meditation.
https://www.amazon.com/Sloth-Mandala-Coloring-Book-Kids/dp/197603728X?SubscriptionId=AKIAJ2F6RDUSIYCWQMFQ&tag=sa-sym-new-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=197603728X

The second sloth color book Slothdala encourages little ones from two to adults to color its sloth mandalas.  Its alluring cover shows a seated sloth meditating with an intricate mandala-like-crown  over its head.
https://www.amazon.com/Slothdala-Coloring-Book-Mandala-Design/dp/1974207706?SubscriptionId=AKIAJ2F6RDUSIYCWQMFQ&tag=sa-sym-new-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=1974207706

"Mandalas are," as defined in my booklet Mandala Color Books: Relaxing Fun or Tool for New Age Meditation? (2016-Lighthouse Trails Research), "a visual tool to  take one into a meditative state just as mantras are a vocal tool to lead one into emptying one's mind. …  As one repeatedly gazes, contemplates, looks upon, stares at the mandala while following its hypnotic patterns, it can have the effect of relaxing the person into an altered state or even a trance."

Color books such as these sloth mandala ones haven't gone away, but have proliferated to the point they are now just another tool in the meditative arsenal available to colorists of all ages.  As my booklet's final paragraph title warned: "Color Me Discerning, or Color Me Deceived: Which Will It Be?"  Therefore, be careful what you color!

Sadly, the sloth, so wondrously created, has now become a meditative icon used to lure many more  into meditative practices such as mindfulness. Instead of focusing on being "more sloth" let us find peace and rest in the Lord Jesus Christ who said, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."  (Matthew 11:28)
