Introduce It:  Noticing Words Beginning with Nn 

These are some of the words you'll notice repeated in Deuteronomy: no, not, none, nations and others!

Journal It:  The N Notebook

Prep:  Outline N, notebook paper, pencil, scissors, colored paper, stapler, glue ....

Make-it:  Make an N Notebook for each child.  Print large outline N, trace it onto yellow pad or notebook paper, create a cover from bright paper, and staple.  For each of the activities use the notebook to write in/ glue words/verses in it..   Find outline N images here:

Notice It: An Itty Bitty Word 

Write "Deuteronomy" on white board.  Ask kids what it says.  Recall it is the fifth OT book and is part of the Pentateuch.   Ask children to carefully look at Deuteronomy to find a small word in it beginning with "Nn."  I am glad you noticed "No!"  Say it a a couple times emphasizing the "no!"  How many parts do you hear or syllables?  Deut-er-o-no-my!

Strips/write: Deuteronomy Words Starting with Nn, Name, and "These are the words!"

On middle part of N, glue: "Deuteronomy Words Starting with Nn;" on upper right corner glue: "Name;" and on left part glue "These are the words!"  Turning "N" sidewise print name.  Recall "Deuteronomy" means "These are the words!"  Point to title and read. Scroll down to see sample. 

Read It:  Some Deuteronomy Words

Print a list of Deuteronomy words beginning with Nn; for very little ones you may only want a few.  Print them from shortest word to longest word!  Use a dark good-sized font.  Here's a list: no, new, now, nor, not, Nun (Joshua Son of Nun), name, near, Nebo (Mt.), nigh, none, nations, neither, Naphtali, neighbor, notwithstanding.  See sample!  Print this same list on whiteboard.  Have kids use a pointer to read them.  

Make-It:  N Notebook Word List

Help kids cut apart word strip, and glue words beginning with no to notwithstanding.  On N glue from left to right. Help kids use a marker to highlight smallest word--"no" and the longest one "notwithstanding."        

Focus On It: The No, and None in the First Commandment

Can you say the first commandment?  Which little word do you find in it?  Did you know that the Ten Commandments are found in two OT books?  There's a list in Exodus 20 and another one in Deuteronomy 5.  Print both Ex. 20:3 and Deut.5:7 on the white board.  Ask kids to compare them and notice how they're different.  Discuss why this commandment is the first one!

Exodus 20:3           "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." 
Deuteronomy 5:7   "Thou shalt have none other gods before me." 

Make-It:  N Notebook No and None OT verses

Print strips:  OT, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Exodus 20:3; and Deuteronomy 5:7  "Thou shalt have none other gods before me."  Glue on OT and verse sidewise on left part of N, Exodus 20:3 and Deuteronomy 5:7 on the N diagonal, and "Thou shalt have none other gods before me." on right N part.  Point to OT.  Highlight no and none.  Point and read both verses.  Recall why "gods" is a little g.  Shut book and say verses together.  Raise voice and shake head on "no" and "none."

Dough It:  Show It!

Prep It:  Copy of verses, modeling dough, waxed paper ....

Model It:  Roll your dough into small snake-like ropes; form letters. Lay them on a piece of waxed paper or other easy to clean up surface.  Have child read the verse to you.  

Notice It:  No, and Not are Negative Words!

There's a lot of no and not words in Deuteronomy.  Some people think it is sooo negative.  But, Pastor Bill Randles often says there's a lot of "love" in Deuteronomy too!  Explore more by looking up the love verses you find in Deuteronomy.  To begin check out Deuteronomy 6:5! 

Spot It!  Dot the Nots!

N Notebook:  Glue a punch dot or make a dot next to "not" in your word list.  Notice not, dot, spot, lot all rhyme!

1st, 2nds:  There's lots of nots to spot in Deuteronomy.  One place you'll see find them is in the Ten Commandments. This Ten Commandments Color Book lists the commandments found in Exodus.  Let's look through it and see if we can spot the nots.  How many nots did you notice?  

Print out a copy of Deuteronomy 5:6-21 or turn to it in your Bible.  How many nots do you see here?  Notice that the last four commandments begin with Neither!"  Highlight the nots with a marker, or trace over the words with Nn.  Scroll to end of lesson for picture of color book.

View It:  The Ten Commandments Colouring Book No.7

The Ten Commandments Colouring Book like the Books of the Bible Coloring Book featured in "L Is for Learn It" is a very  inexpensive coloring book printed by Trinitarian Bible Society in London.  It's also published in the USA and carried by Lighthouse Trails Store here:

There's twelve KJV Bible verse color books including the one in this lesson and the Ll Lesson which are both from Series 1 Colouring Books.  Not only are they great for kids but good for adults as well.  They are perfect gifts for a grandparent or a Senior citizen. There are ten other coloring books in Series 2 (6 books) and Series 3 (4 books).  Series 2 and Series 3 overall are easier to color and better suited to younger children.  What a special gift for one's kids or grandkids! I highly recommend them.

Color It:  The First Commandment Page

Here's a fun way to use the first commandment page and give it as a gift or just hang it up.

Prep It:  Colouring Book No.7, fine line markers/ colored pencils, glue, scissors, glitter, "none" strip (trace letters) from page. 

Make-It:  Glitter the "NO".  Color the page.  Print a NONE strip also.  After the page is colored, carefully tear out the page, and then make a  8X1/1/2" frame for it.  Make its top/bottom one inch wide; make its sides 1/2" wide. This activity might be done by first or second graders and up.  If you wish to use it for younger kids, you might want to print it enlarging the letters.

Make-a-Puzzle:   Rather than frame it, when the page is colored, cut around each word and the 1.  Add a reference Exodus 20:3 section.  Put all the pieces in a small zipped bag; let kids put the verse together. 

 

Know About It!  The Seven Nations

Deuteronomy 7 is all about seven nations God's people would meet.  Do you know what a nation is?  A nation is a place or country where one lives.  We live in the United States of America.  It is our nation.  In Deuteronomy, God told his people that on their trip to the Promised land that they'd meet other nations or peoples.  Because these nations had other gods and did many sins, God was going to give their lands to his people.

These nations were the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites.  All of their names say "ite" at the end.  They were bigger and mightier than God's people.  But God told them an important not when he said to them "Do not be afraid of them!  I will help you defeat these nations.  Get rid of their gods, the places where their altars are, and their statues and images."

God also said a big "NO!!" to making a covenant or getting together with those nations. God's people were told not to join up with them for if they did, their children would marry each other.  Then the children would begin worshipping and bowing down to their gods."  "If you obey me," said God, "then you'll be blessed.  If not, you will be sad and unhappy."

Print It, Glue It:  

Print out strips/write them out.  Strips: The Seven Nations-Deut.7; and Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites,  Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites; and "NO!".   Glue : "The Seven Nations-Deut. 7" to diagonal of the N, and first four "ites" to the left of N, and the last three "ites" to the right of the N.  Stick on a "seven" sticker or write a 7.  Check out page samples at bottom.

Older Kids: Ages 8-12

Notice It:  The N Notebook

Older kids may be able to make their own N notebook:  tracing N onto note paper, cutting out a bright cover, even printing out lists on their computer.  Be sure and use ideas above for older kids too; if you wish, let them write the information in their notebooks rather than printing and gluing strips; or do both! 

Hear It:  The Nation Situation:  Seven Abomination Nations

The word "nations" pops up throughout Deuteronomy.  Often, when you see the word "nations," there will be a warning to the Israelites not to hang out with, mix, or mingle with the nations around them. Why?  It was because these nations had many gods!  Not only did they have many gods, but they made images and statues to these gods.  They worshipped them.  They even sacrificed their babies to the gods.  God said they did abominable or evil practices.

Recall the first lesson "A Is for Abhor It" in which God hated the killing of innocent babies. You know the saddest thing of all, people still get mixed up with others that turn their back on God.  Soon they learn their ways, and do sins just like long ago!  

Did the Israelites do all God said?  Did they obey God's warnings?  No, sorrowfully, they ignored it or forgot it.  So later on, a really big nation Babylon came and took all the people out of the Promised Land and took them to Babylon. How sad then were the Israelites.

Map It:  The Seven Nations of Canaan

Explore this "The Seven Nations" clickable map.  Encourage kids to explore more about at least one of the seven nations using the sites given.  Write a brief report about that nation or nations having at least three sentences or more describing it.  Find the map here and e.g. the Canaanites here:

Notice It:  Notice A Not-Nations Verse in Psalm 106

Of God's people, Psalm 106:34-35 records, "They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom God commanded them: But were mingled among the heathen (nations), and learned their works."  Help kids go back through the chapter and notice these "nots!" highlighting them in their Bibles: understood not, remembered not, waited not, believed not, hearkened not,  and did not destroy.   

Notice the "nevertheless" and "thus and therefore" verses too.  Note God forgave them over and over saving them out of their troubles.  How great was God's mercy to them!  Discuss this.  How are we like the Israelites?

Learn It:  A NT No and None Verse

In the NT in John 14:6 it Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life no man (or woman or boy or girl) cometh to the Father, but by me."  You see no one can come to God except by trusting in the Lord Jesus.  It's a NT no verse.  In the NT in Acts 4:12 says: "Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. This is a NT none verse.

God's word tells us because we've all sinned we must ask Jesus to forgive our sins, and believe that he died for our sins on the cross, and rose again on the third day.  If we'll confess our sins, then God forgives us and makes us his boy or girl.  Those who do this become God's children and come to know Him as Savior.  After, Jesus will help us to follow him each day, pray, and read our Bibles.  

Add It:  The NT No and None Verse to the Notebook

Print It: Glue It:  Print John 14:6 and Acts 4:12.  Cut apart; glue on section left part of N, another section in the center and the rest on the right.  Glue reference on the bottom.  Do the same for Acts 4:12.  Use a highlighter to highlight no, neither, none, and name. See page sample below.

Note It!  Notebook Note:  Older Kids may make pages outlined in younger kids' lessons as well.  When the Nn Book is complete, it is a great little book to keep and reread or share with a younger sibling. 

Prioritize It:  Pray for Those In Authority!

I Timothy 2:1-2 instructs us to pray for those in our nation who are in authority over us.  In our last lesson one of the Corrie's stories mentioned Father Ten Boom praying for the Queen in every prayer he prayed.  My own dad at every meal always prayed I Timothy 2:1-2.  The end of the verse always has stuck in my mind that: "we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

Make It:  A Biblical Priority:  Prayer Napkin Marker 

Prep It:  small 5"X5" patriotic napkin, scissors, tape, glue, printed verse, slogan .....

Make-It:  Open napkin; fold in half length wise; fold again.  Cut inch off top/bottom.  Fringe.  

Print It:  I Timothy 2:1-2:  "I exhort therefore, that first of all, ... prayers ... be made for all men;  For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."   This verse is a special one to notice, obey, and to pray every day!  Cut round printed verse so it fits on marker; glue to marker.  Hint: Print three or four words per line.  On reverse side glue:  "It's a Bible priority to pray for those in authority!" (LEP) 

Teachers, Parents, Grandparents, YOU!

Encourage It:  Pray for Our Leaders 

Introduce It:  Print a short list of national or state leaders: such as the President, the Vice President, the Attorney General and so on.  Perhaps you'd like to find tiny pics of them.  Glue below the marker slogan: "It's a Bible Priority to Pray for Those in Authority."  Then, guide your children each day to pray for them.  Remember, it says "all men!"

Prayer Image Coloring Pages:  Find a prayer coloring page for kids to color; glue red, white, and blue star cutouts round the edges when coloring is finished.  The page below has I Tim. 2:1-2 on it.  This is a good page; cut off "President's Day."  Color carefully.  Cut out hat bottom.  Can stick a prayer list into "hat."  Read II Timothy 2:1-2 aloud with kids.  Memorize it too!   Find the page here:

Introduce It:  Be a Role Model

This lesson is about what kids and parents can do to model or be examples to those around us. 

Listen to It! What a Little Kid Did!

I viewed a video of a little guy about seven teaching his preschool sister a verse.  It was so special to see what a great example he was as he looked right at her and said the words slowly as she pointed to her lips and so on.  Yes, little kids can be role models too.  Kudos to those parents for teaching their children to share the word.

Understand It:  A Deuteronomy Young Man

Caleb was a young man that we read of in Deuteronomy who was a great model of what to do.  He had a special pal named Joshua.  Together they showed others what it was like not to be afraid and to trust the Lord.  In our "S Is for Search It Lesson" we'll learn more about him!

Model It:  Parents Must Be Role Models

Today I chose Luke 24 for our story not only because it had a reference in it to Deuteronomy 18, but because when I was a girl this was one of my favorite stories that I read aloud on Saturday nights with my parents.  You see my parents loved the Bible.  And because they did, they taught me how to learn to love it too.  When we read it together, it was a special family time.  They were amazing role models or examples.  I wonder when you grow up if you'll remember something special your dad and mom did to help you learn to love Jesus?

Hear It:  Jesus!  The Best Role Model of All!

In our story two people were walking down a road to Emmaus. They were sad because Jesus had died.  So they were talking about all that had happened.  Then Jesus came near them.  But, the two didn't know it was Jesus! 

Jesus saw they were sad, so he asked, "Why are you so sad?"  One named Cleopas said, "Are you a stranger here and haven't heard about Jesus dying?  We thought he was someone who would save Israel.  Besides, this morning some ladies went to his tomb where he was buried and didn't find Jesus.  Some angels said he was alive." 

Then as Jesus walked along with them he began to quote scriptures from the OT explaining that Moses wrote in Deuteronomy and other places that one day a Prophet would come and suffer and die for them.  Who was Jesus  talking about?  The Bible says he was talking about himself!  But the two didn't know it was Jesus!

When they got near their home in Emmaus, the two begged, "Please come in and stay with us because it's getting dark.  So Jesus did.  Inside they all sat down together to eat.  Jesus took some bread, blessed it, and gave it to them.  Then their eyes were opened!  And they knew it was Jesus!  But suddenly he vanished or disappeared out of their sight.  Jesus was gone!

They said, "Didn't our hearts burn in us when he talked with us by the way and when he opened to us the scriptures?"  Then off the two went back down the road to Jerusalem to tell their friends they'd seen Jesus and he had eaten with them!  Yes, Jesus was risen indeed!     Luke 24:13-35

Learn It:  OT and NT Prophecy Verses

While Jesus was walking along and talking with them, he used a verse from Deuteronomy (Luke 24:27) and other scriptures to help them understand why he had come to die for them.  In Deuteronomy 18:15 Moses said that one day a Prophet (Jesus) would be raised up and to that Prophet one should listen.  This OT verse has a star beside this "prophecy verse" in my Bible.

And in Acts 3:22 there's another NT star verse almost like it says: "For Moses truly said, ... "A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you ... him shall ye hear ...."  Who was raised up?  It was Jesus!  Acts 3:26 says, " Unto you first God, raising up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning every one of you from his iniquities (sins)."   The Deuteronomy verse came true just like Moses said it would!

1st, 2nd:  Help children find the Deuteronomy verse/Acts verses and highlight and read them.

All:  Say verse this way:  "Moses ... said, "A prophet (Jesus!) shall the Lord your God raise up unto you ... him shall ye hear...."  Acts 3:22   (Make "hand Bible," point up, and cup ear.)
 
Note:  A KJV Bible I have has a wonderful "Prophecies of the Messiah" section at the end which lists Deuteronomy 18:15 as the prophetic scripture and Acts 3:20,22 as the fulfilled scriptures!

Move-It:  Acts 3:22 Star Finger Reminder 

Prep:  star pattern; heavy paper; small scissors; fine-line markers or colored pencils; glue ....
Make-It:  Print pattern; glue to heavy paper.  Cut out. Cut a finger hole. Color. Glue on strip --Acts 3:22.
Move-It:  Find verse in Bible; look through hole to see verse.  For really little ones they may pretend to read verse.   Highlight your verse with a marker.   May add a sticker star.  Use Finger Reminder as a marker.  Find pattern at lesson conclusion.

Make-It:  "The Road to Emmaus"  Story In a Bag

Prep:  Needed:  one gift bag or lunch bag; stapler, tape, cutouts, paper, word strips, glue, small scissors .....
Cutouts:  two men faces, 'Jesus face', question marks, cross, road signs, scroll, story strips .....
Make-it:  Turn bag so bottom flap is in front; staple sides shut to make a small pocket. Place small scroll cut out onto pocket center.  Glue on Luke 24.  Color faces; cut out mouths.  I mounted my three faces on foam letter Os and attached them to a 2"X4" folded paper.  Other story pieces may also be taped onto folded paper to stick into pocket.  Hint:  Tape figure or object at top so they stick out.
Tell-It:  These folded papers then may be slipped over the edge of your bag pocket in order to retell the story.   Slip over men--one on either side of 'Jesus' figure.  Slip question marks over heads of men to recall they didn't know who Jesus was.  Put cross over top of Jesus as he explained to them scriptures about himself. Insert Emmaus Road sign,.  Later at 'Emmaus' slip in little loaf of bread in front of Jesus.  Remove Jesus when he vanishes.

Older Kids: Ages 8-12

Learn It:  Deuteronomy Role Model Directions!

Deuteronomy six tells dads and moms to talk with their kids about Scripture all day long whatever they are doing whether it is at breakfast when they get up, when they are hiking down a trail, or when they are riding in the car.  Kids are to listen and learn so when they have families they'll know what to do.  Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9 to your children.   Which words were to be in their hearts?  When were the children to learn the words? 

Speak It:  Mom Was a Modeler!

My mom modeled speaking the word to me.  Always she read it aloud.  She spoke it from morning to night whenever she was around me.  She counseled me.  She corrected me.  She spoke words into my ears loud and clear.  And those words from Scripture have been in my heart all my life!

Say It!  Speak the Word!

Hear It:  Read Luke 24 with Kids!

Read Luke 24:13-35 with your kids. Discuss this chapter emphasizing how Jesus drew near and went with them walking, talking, and later eating with them.  What a perfect picture of how we too should relate to those around us.  Especially notice verse twenty-four with its reference to Deuteronomy 18:15.                

Star It:  A Prophecy Verse God Did Fulfill

A  Deuteronomy verse God did fulfill: "The LORD thy God will raise up ...  A Prophet ...  of thy brethren, ... unto him shall ye hearken." (Deut. 18:15)  Stick a star beside it. or draw a star.

Moses told Israel that the Lord would raise up a Prophet. What kind of a "P" do you see?  (uppercase "P.")  This prophet would be a special one.  Do you know who this prophet was?  Jesus!  Do you see the phrase "of thy brethren?"  This means that Jesus would be born of Jewish parents. When that Prophet came what were people to do?

Find the prophecy NT verse in Acts 3:22.  Highlight it and stick on a star.  Another NT verse that also says this is in John 1:45:  " Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

Star It: Make OT/NT Star Markers

Prep:  star pattern, yellow paper, scissors, tape.  Note: This star pattern is from the pattern section of my Christian Activity Book Celebrate the Bible.  Run off two star patterns or any star image.  Cut out star pattern, Add 3 x 1/2" yellow paper below; cut fringe on bottom.  Tape fringe piece in middle of back of star so star can be placed over page edge.  Print strips or write: Deut.18:15 and Acts 3:22.  View pattern from Celebrate the Bible at end of lesson.
Mark-It:   Highlight OT and NT verses, and place marker near each one.  

Do you truly "Celebrate the Bible" at your home?  Are you so full of  its thoughts that it spills out into your conversation!  Make-it times are opportune times to talk as you play and work!

Talk About It:  Take Time to Talk With Your Kids

Think of our Lord Jesus explaining the word while he walked.  Think of Philip in his chariot riding with the Ethiopian man, and how he too opened his mouth and preached unto him Jesus.  When my grandson and I would go to a nearby park we would walk along noticing things around us, but often our talk turned to the Lord. Deuteronomy teaches us--talk it, walk it, live it!

Share It:  Corrie's Train Rides

Corrie Ten Boom wrote in The Hiding Place (Young Reader's Edition) how she "treasured" her time with Father ten Boom as they rode the train back and forth from Haarlem into Amsterdam.  There, Father would get the correct time of day from the Naval Observatory by which to set his watches.

Father would also visit Jewish wholesalers who supplied him with watches and parts.  Corrie described it this way:  "After a brief business ... Father would draw a small Bible from his traveling case; then the wholesaler ... would snatch a book or scroll our of a drawer, and clap on a prayer cap  onto his head.  And the two of them would be off arguing, comparing, interrupting, contradicting--reveling in each other's company."  On her ride home Corrie, alone with father, often talked about the various problems she was having.  How she loved this time! (pp.23-24)

In My Father's House: The Years Before the Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom is an awesome book about Corrie and her family.  In it are many stories of Corrie and her parents, siblings, or friends. If ever there was a family whose parents were godly examples this would have to be one of them!  Also get the classic Young Reader's Edition of The Hiding Place  and share its stories with your kids.  After choose stories to make into Mini Corrie Story Books.

These stories show how the Bible and prayer were never stopped whether at the Beje, the prisons, or the camps or wherever the Ten Booms were.  What shining examples of the Lord Jesus they were.  We too can shine as lights in this dark world too, whether young or old, as the old song "Jesus Bids Us Shine" clearly says.  The first verse goes: "Jesus bids us shine, With a clear, pure light, Like a little candle burning in the night; in this world of darkness we must shine, You in your small corner and I in mine."  Teach it to your kids, and go out this day determined to cling to the word regardless of what is happening all around.  There is but one answer to all of the chaos--it is found in the sure Word of God!!

Explain Jesus was out in the wilderness.  Satan, the Tempter tried to make him sin.  Jesus spoke to him.  What words did Jesus repeat three times?  What were other key words Jesus also said?  What verses did he say?  Where were the verses from?  Find out in our lesson!    

Recall It: The Pentateuch Books and The Four Gospels

At the start of our first Deuteronomy lesson we learned a little rhyme that said:  "1,2,3,4,5

at Deuteronomy we will arrive."  Yes, Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the OT.  That's the book we've been studying.   

There's a neat coloring book "The Books of the Bible" that comes from England.  Hold it up!* Point to its cover/title.  What book is in the middle?  The Holy Bible!  Around it are other Bible books.  Here's Genesis and Exodus, the first two books of the Bible?  Do you see Deuteronomy?  No, but I'll make a small cut under the picture of "The Holy Bible" and add a little book I've cut out that says "Deuteronomy."

In our "Keep It" lesson we also learned: "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is the ground we stand upon."  They are called "The Four Gospels."  In them are stories about Jesus.  Point to them on the cover.  Open to the "Title Page. What does it say?  Do you see the tiny Bible?  

Turn the page to see all sixty-six Bible books and their abbreviations.  On the left is "The OT column."  Count down five books to Deuteronomy and its abbreviation.  Remember the first Deuteronomy Bible marker you made--it said "Deut." on it.  I like the word "Deut" it rhymes with "beut".   On the right is the NT column.   Do notice Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Just one has an abbreviation.  Which is it? (Matt.)

Find the five books of the Pentateuch page. Recall the Intro lesson where each child was encouraged to put together a giant "Deuteronomy" from outline letters. Review some of the Intro lesson with the children here.

Hear It:  Jesus Is Tempted in the Wilderness

In Matthew and Luke chapter four we can read the story of how Jesus was out in a dry, hot desert place for forty days and forty nights.  The Bible says he got hungry.  Around him were wild beasts. After this time the Tempter came to Jesus.  He tried to tempt Jesus to do wrong. 

First, Satan said.  "See all these stones.  If you're God, why don't you turn them into bread so you can eat it."  Then, Jesus said, "It is written that man can't just live by eating bread, but by every word that comes from God's mouth."  Where was that verse written?  Deuteronomy 8:3.

Next, Satan said, Here's a high spot to jump from.  If you're God why don't you jump down from here, and the angels will help you.  Then Jesus said, "It is written you shall not tempt the Lord your God."  Where was that verse written?  Deuteronomy 6:16.

Finally, Satan said, "Come up to this very high mountain, and look around.  Look at all the places you can see.  I will give them to you if you fall down and worship me."  Then Jesus said, "Get behind me Satan, it is written you shall only worship the Lord your God and only serve him."  Where was that verse written?  Deuteronomy 6:13.

Three times Jesus repeated "it is written" verses to Satan.  Did Jesus sin?  No!   Hebrews 4:15 says he was tempted, but without sin.  Satan left Jesus, and then God sent angels to come and help him.
(Story in Matthew 4, Mark 1, and Luke 4)  

Learn It!  An "It Is Written Verse!"

Luke 4:4  "And  Jesus answered ... saying, It is written, THAT MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD OF GOD."

Matthew 4:4 is almost like it:  "But he answered and said, "It is written,  MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDTH OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD."  Both verses are quoted from Deut.8:3.

Find them in your Bible. Highlight them.  What do you notice about the references? the print size?  What did Satan tell Jesus to turn the stones into?  Did Jesus do that?  No, instead Jesus said we need to be listening to God's words too.  By the way, what letter does "Luke" begin with?

Read It:  Deuteronomy 8:3 (1st.2nd.)

When Jesus said "it is written" he was referring to Deuteronomy 8:3 which says:

"And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, ... that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live."

Help kids find the verse, read it, and highlight the darkened words.  Jesus also used two other Deuteronomy verses.  Locate them! Deuteronomy 6:16, Deuteronomy 6:13

Motions:  Put two hands together to make "Bible,"  look down toward hands,  yell, and move hand "Bible" up and down.; or may open Bible to the Deut. 8:3 verse and actually point to the text.

Make-It:  Pentateuch/  Gospel Tubes

Prep:  Needed:  Two Toilet Tubes; Books of the Bible Colouring Book Number 4,* tape, fine line markers, colored pencils ....
* This can be page you've already colored with markers/colored pencils.

Print:  Print Genesis-Deuteronomy page from book at 75%; then cut round printed page so it just fits round a toilet tube. If  you haven't done so, outline letters with marker; then wrap it round the tube.  Tuck in ends and tape.   (See picture end of lesson!)  This is your Pentateuch Tube to use with first five books of the Bible strips, or Deuteronomy 8:3 strips!  Make a " Four Gospels  Tube" the same way, and four strips."  View pic at end of lesson!

Books of Bible Strips:  Cut eleven strips 1 1/2"X 6".  Six are for the Pentateuch tube; five for Gospels tube.  On Pentateuch tube strips: write/print Pentateuch, Genesis, Exodus-Deuteronomy; and on the Gospels tube strips: Four Gospels, Matthew, Mark-John.   

Note:  If you don't have a color book; simply print out Genesis-Deuteronomy on one page and Matthew-Mark on another page.  Measure paper to fit tube, wrap, tuck, and tape.

Play:  Have kids put tube in front of them with mixed up strips inside.  Place hands under table, or on shoulders.  On signal challenge players (you can be a player as well.)  to arrange strips in order beginning with: the Pentateuch and then Genesis-Deuteronomy.  When finished sit up straight, and put hands under table or on shoulders.  Award a point to winner who has it correct.  Do several times.

You can have a number of tubes like this for Bible books sections. Kids then choose a tube put it in order and check in Bible to see if correct.  Bible verses can be done the same way with one word or phrase per strip plus reference.     

Color It:  Jesus' Temptation Picture

Prep:  Print a page from Images of Jesus' Temptation. Print two each; Deuteronomy, "It is written!," Matthew 4:4, and Luke 4:4.  Use small scissors to pop out parts.  Also needed:  extra paper; red, orange, yellow crayons;  cotton ball; blue paper; and pencil or marker to write verses: Matthew 4:4, or Luke 4:4, and part of Deut. 8:3. 

Make-it:  Let kids color picture.  On another sheet of paper color a red, orange, and yellow sun mixing colors.  Cut it out.  Insert behind cloud/glue to page.  Add a bit of cotton to clouds.  Glue word strips round frame.  Print verses to go at bottom.  May also print them on computer if child is unable to write them.  To see sample scroll to end of lesson!  Talk about your picture; hang it up!

Older Kids (Ages 8-12)

Learn It:  To Learn or Not to Learn

Deuteronomy 30:12,13 Moses instructs the Israelites that every seven years at the Feast of Tabernacles that Levites were to read aloud God's law to all the people so they might learn to fear or honor the Lord their God and do all the words of the law.

Deuteronomy 18:9, on the other hand, warns the people when they get into the Promised Land not to learn to do evil practices being done by the nations around them.  Verses 10-14 then lists these pagan practices in detail.  By the way, these same not to learn practices apply to us as well.

Suggestion:  Parents e.g., choose one of these "not to learn" practices such as witchcraft to discuss with your child.  Perhaps you might wish to talk about The Harry Potter series which overflows with occult practices! 

Hear It:  Matthew 4:1-11  Mark 1:12-13  Luke 4:1-13

Read aloud the Scriptures with the children.  Print a copy/copies of the numbered sentences/matches.  As the answers are found the child will cross off the matching letter.

Once this little puzzle is finished, discuss the answers with the children.  Note that Mark is the shortest of the three passages.  In it Mark gives us one detail not in Matthew or Luke, namely that wild beasts were also present. 

Learn It:  Whatsoever Things Were Written In the Past!

"For whatsoever things were written aforetime (in the past) were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."  Romans 15:4

Have kids check their NT "Table of Contents" to find Romans, and highlight this verse!  Can your child say the NT books through Romans?

In the Gospels Jesus often referred back to the OT books quoting "it is written" verses.  He often mentioned what Moses, Isaiah, and David had written; or what the prophets had written.  So too we must, as this verse teaches, learn to check out these OT references to see how they related to what Jesus taught,  What an example Jesus gave us in this Temptation Lesson and in numerous other verses!   Select a Bible that has these references near to each verse. Teach your child to use them today!

Make-It:  "Books of the Bible" Markers

Prep:  Colouring Book: Books of the Bible title page; small scissors; markers; colored pencils; glue; tape; ruler: paper....    Print this page. Cut round "Books of the Bible" strip; and small Bible.  Enlarge small Bible 125% to make it just a little larger.  Use small scissors to cut out top curve area of little Bible to slip on marker top.

Print or tear out Abbreviation Page.  Cut around the NT part.  Prepare marker rectangle paper 8 1/2" X 2".  See pictures at end of lesson!  Don't have a color book:  get little Bible, NT book list from Bible images page or type them out yourself. 

Make-It:  Front Side of Marker:  Slip little "Bible" on to top; secure with tape. Outline letters on strip using a fine line marker or colored pencils.  Glue on "Books of the Bible" strip.  Turn marker over.  Glue on NT books strip.  If you have gummed ABC letters stick on NT or use a marker to write NT.  Slip into your Bible at Romans 15:4.  View sample marker end of this lesson.

If you wish make a second marker for the OT.  Cut round the OT sections on the abbreviation page.  Stick or write OT at the bottom.

Remember!  You may use any part of the younger kids' section any time you'd like as well. 

Apply It:  Resisting Temptation

Temptations are testing times when we are tempted to do things we know the Lord would not want us to. In the Lord's prayer Jesus tells us to pray that we will not enter into temptation but that we will be delivered from evil.  If we are Christians and have come to know Jesus as our own Savior we must read his word, and put his words into our heart so that we will not sin against him.  In Matthew 11:29 Jesus says we are to learn of him and He will give us help and rest.

Hear It: A Great Read Aloud Book

The Tanglewoods' Secret is a wonderful kids' Christian fiction book by author Patricia St. John that is a perfect read-aloud book.  The story tells of two children who live with their aunt and uncle while their parents are in India.  Set in rural England it describes how Philip, eleven, and Ruth, nine, spend time outdoors making a secret hideout that they soon share with a boy named Terry.  Philip and Ruth grow fond of Terry as he leads them on some awesome adventures, until one day a dreadful accident happens.

Ruth, in the meantime, is often in trouble with her aunt causing her aunt to threaten to send her away to a boarding school until her parents return.  Terribly upset Ruth runs away.  There she meets the Good Shepherd, Jesus, and begins to change.

Soon after she's tempted to go back to being just like she was before she asked the Good Shepherd into her life.  In the book the author so beautifully explains how Ruth learned to overcome these temptations and become more like her Good Shepherd.  This book is a classic read with a timeless story that will help your child or grandchild learn about the Lord Jesus and his power to make us new creatures in Christ.

Learn It:  "Color Me Discerning or Color Me Deceived: Which Will It Be?"

In this lesson as well as others several Christian color books have been mentioned.  These English color books are full of the Word.  They are sold separately or in sets.  The color book suggested in this lesson is The Books of the Bible and is very inexpensive.   Some are especially great for kids, and others are suitable for adults too.  While Christian color books are something that will fill a child or adult with the word, there are hundreds of other color books that attempt to do the opposite.

Full of mesmerizing images called mandalas, these New Age color books for both kids and adults  can take you into a meditative state as you look at them over and over.  They are said to be calming, however they can open you up to practices as Deuteronomy warns we need not partake of.  Noticing how passionate colorists of all ages were clamoring to buy such color books I wrote a a pamphlet warning people about them.  Published by Lighthouse Trails it is titled Mandala Color Books: Relaxing Fun or a Tool for New Age Meditation?   May you always be a colorist that is discerning rather than deceived!  Find the booklet here:

Little Kids: (Ages 4-7)

K Is for Keep It!

K is for keep it,

as Jesus did say,

"Hear the word 

of God, and keep it."

Yes, keep it today!

Say It:  Luke 11:28

First read it:  "Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it."  Luke 11:28

Next say it this way:  "Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it."

Print verse on white board.  Read it to children.  Reread it emphasizing the three words.  Do this several times pointing to each words as you read.  Let K-2 kids "journal it" by copying the verse into their journal.  Illustrate.    

Locate It:  Find Verse in Luke

This verse is in the New Testament (NT).  Let's find that.  Assist kids.  Do you see the word New Testament?  Hold up your own Bible.  Have children highlight "The New Testament."  Say, let's find the gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  Do this.  Now, let' s go back to Luke.  Find chapter; find verse.  If you have a red letter Bible, "What color are the words in this verse?"  Explain words that Jesus said are often shown in red.  

!Idea!  This would be the perfect time to give kids a Books of the Bible marker to insert in Luke.  

Learn It: First Four Gospels Rhymes

Matthew, Mark, Luke,

and John is the ground

we stand upon!

A lesson aim is to focus in on the first four gospels, to have the children get to know they are in the New Testament, to recognize NT as an abbreviation for the New Testament, and to be able to locate each one.  Journal it, and learn it.  "Train up a child" is a key component of these lessons.  Resolve to  do it!  It will pay great dividends.

"Blessed" means "happy."

Make-It:  Happy Face Keep It Pencil

Prep It: Needed: new unsharpened pencil, straw, or pipe cleaner; small scissors;  small shapes to fit onto pencil, straw, or pipe cleaner:  "happy face" circle, small folded 2"X 1 1/4" 'Bible rectangle', two 3/4"X2" rectangles.  Cut two tiny slits in the happy face, Bible, and two strips so as to to slip onto pencil starting with two rectangles at bottom, then the Bible, and circle.

Print It/Glue It:  Print verse in parts:  "Blessed are they --that hear the word of God--and keep it."--Luke 11:28"  Cut apart.  Tape "Blessed are they" onto "Happy Face;"  "that … God" onto Bible; "keep it." onto small rectangle; and "Luke 11:28" onto rectangle.  Slide reference rectangle to bottom of pencil.  Next add "and keep it." After add Bible, and Happy Face circle.

Move It:  Say verse while moving parts.  As you say "Blessed are they" move circle; then as you say next part move the Bible, and after move the rectangles.  Or push all of the shapes toward the bottom of the pencil or pipe cleaner and move up one at a time as you say it.    

Keep It In Mind:  Deuteronomy Keeps!

Just like our Luke verse, the book of Deuteronomy has many places that has the word "keep" in it.

So keep this in your mind.  And if you find a "keep" word put a K beside it. 

Hear It: Some King Things to Keep in Mind!

King is a word that begins with what letter?  Exactly, a Kk!  It begins just like "keep."  So keep that in mind too as you hear this little story from Deuteronomy 17.

Hear It: Some Things About Kings

Deuteronomy tells us some things about kings.  God told the people that later on when got into that good land they would get a king.  And when they did, they should remember some king things.  First, their king should be an Israelite, not from any other nation.  Second, their king should not get a lot of horses.  Third, their king should not get a lot of wives.  And fourth their king should not get a lot of gold and silver.  These things the king should not do!  But, there was something their king should do.  He should write a copy of the Book of the Law.  He should read it all the days of his life.  The king thing that was most important was that the king should fear God, and keep all the words of God's book-- to do them!  Deuteronomy 17:14-20

Make-It:  "Some King Things" Crown Booklet

Prep It:  Print crown cover.* Trace it to make crown pages; word strips; glue; crayons, …..
Cut out eight crown page shapes.  Print out text below; cut into strips.  Let kids write title cover:
"Some King Things"  From Deut. 17.  Cut apart strips; glue onto pages.  Draw king.  Draw horses, women, and money.  Draw a scroll.  Draw a heart.  Write keep it!

God said:  when you get to the good land, here are some king
things to remember.

1.  The king should not be from another nation.
2.  The king should not multiply horses to himself.
3.  The king should not multiply wives to himself.
4.  The king should not multiply gold and silver to himself.

2.  The king should read the Book of the Law.
3.  The king should fear God, and keep the law
with all his heart, and with all his soul.

Hear It:  A Kid King Who Did Right In God's Sight!

Remember what we just learned about some king things God said kings should do, and not do.  This little story is a about kid king who did right in God's sight.

Josiah--the Kid King  (II Kings 22, 23) 

Josiah was just eight when he got to be king.  His father and grandfather hadn't been good kings for they had done bad things following others gods and worshipping them.  But, when Josiah was yet young the Bible says he began to seek after the Lord.

As he grew he found evil things that crept into his land.  So, Josiah decided to get rid of all the bad things he found.  He swept away idols--he smashed them.  He swept away idol altars--he broke them.  He took away evil places and priests.

Then, Josiah decided to fix up God's house.  He asked worker men to come in to fix it. As the men were working, Hilkiah the priest found an old scroll that was God's book.  "Look," Hilkiah told Shaphan the scribe writer, "I found God's Book of the Law. Take it to the king!"

Did Shaphan do that?  Yes, Shaphan did.  He even did something else; he read the Book of the Law to the king.  As the king listened, he felt so sad to hear that they'd forgotten God's book.  He wept and cried.  He even ripped some of his clothes.  He felt sorry in his heart for his sin and for his people's sin.  The Bible says he had a tender heart.  What would Josiah do?

He sent some men to a prophetess named Huldah.  Huldah asked God what would happen.  Huldah told them God said he was going to punish the kings of Judah for their sin of worshipping and bowing to idol gods.  But, God said he'd noticed that Josiah had a tender heart and had wept because of his sin.  Therefore, Josiah wouldn't be punished; he would live in peace.

Later Josiah  called everyone-- the old and the young-- to come to a gathering.  What was Josiah's plan?  He would stand to read: "The Book of  the Law!"  All the people stood up too. They listened. They agreed to keep God's laws.  They did.  (II Kings 22,23  II Chronicles 34, 35)

II Kings 23:3  "And the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statues with all their heart and soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book.  And all the people stood to the covenant."

II Kings 22:1  "And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, …."  You may teach this verse too.  Smile broadly when you come to "right," and point up.

II Kings 23:25  "And like him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him."

Josiah Was a Keeper--a Keeper of God's Word!

Note some rhyming words in this rhyme:  crept, swept, wept, and kept!  There's a sequence here:  evil creeps or seeps in, Josiah sweeps or puts it away, Josiah weeps and repents, and Josiah reads and keeps God's Word! Others they sleep-- just ignore evil, and pretend it's not there.  Sounds like today doesn't it?  Oh, that we might keep his word with all our hearts and souls!

Big Kids (Ages 8-12)

Say It:  Deuteronomy 11:1  A Verse for Today!

"Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, (obey his instructions) and his statutes, (laws) and his judgments,(acts of judgment) and his commandments (orders given by God) alway." 

Find this verse in your Bible; highlight it.  It's an easy reference to remember--why?  Notice this verse begins with "therefore." There are many other "therefore" verses; be watching for them.  Do you know the little three dot triangle symbol for therefore?  If not research it, and you will see it --it is like the domino symbol for three with one dot on top and two below.  Make this symbol by this verse.  This verse says to love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, statues, judgments, and commandments alway.   Notice these four: charge, statues, judgments, and commandments or these three: commandments, statues, judgments, and often grouped together.

Make-It:  A Scroll Scripture Marker

Go to Bible Scroll Images or Ancient Scroll Images.  Print one.  Cut out.  Onto it glue/tape printed copy of Deuteronomy 11:1.   Place in your Bible as a Marker.

Search It:  Two Kk Therefore Verses 4:39,40.

Find these therefore verses "Know therefore …." and "Keep therefore ….."  in Deuteronomy 4:39,40.  Write them in your journal using the "therefore" sign instead of the printed word.

Understand It!  Keep the Passover!  Deuteronomy 16:1-8

Read together.  The Israelites were to keep the Passover unto the Lord in their new land.  There they were to remember how the Lord had brought them out of slavery in Egypt.  They were to remember how the Lord had told them to put the blood of a spotless lamb  on their doorposts and lintels so God's angel would pass over their homes, and keep them safe.  They were to remember how they came through the Red Sea with Moses as their leader.  Passover was to be celebrated at sundown in March or April.  No leavened bread or bread that rises was to be eaten during this seven day time. 

Hear It!  Such a Passover!  II Kings 23:21-25

Josiah the King kept God's laws.  Not only did he keep God's laws but he commanded all the people to once again keep God's special celebration called the Passover or Pesach as God commanded in Exodus 12:3.

Scripture records in II Kings 23 and II Chronicles 34 that there never a Passover celebration like it from the days of the judges of Israel right through all the kings of Israel and Judah right up to Josiah.  How old was Josiah then?  He began to reign as king at eight years old, and this was his eighteenth year as king.  Add them together, and what did you get?  Twenty-six!  He was not an old king at all.

This extra-ordinary Passover was proceeded by Josiah getting rid of mediums and wizards, images and idols, and all the abominations he spied in both Judah and Jerusalem. He fully followed God's laws. And as the Bible says he turned to God with all his heart, soul, and might.

Search It!  Keep It! and  Other _____ It! Passover Rules

Find Exodus 12-14.  Search for these "it" verses you'll discover.

Discuss:  After viewing this video discuss:  Did you notice something pictured in the video that is incorrect?  ( The Book of the Law pictured as a book with a spine rather than a scroll!)  What is the difference between an idol and a memorial?  Why was it alright for Josiah to get rid of the idols?  Why is it not alright for people to topple memorials on private property?  Or knock down a statue in a church today?  If one views an idol image in a church or a memorial that lifts up someone or something that is evil what is the proper thing to do?

*  Color the picture.  Make a pop-out Moses by having a parent or older child use small scissors to cut round Moses from bottom of picture line round his robe edge and sleeve to this hand down to his head and up around his rod and back down robe sleeve to bottom.  Pop him out.  Glue to blue piece of paper.   Little kids will enjoy moving Moses with his rod as he leads the people through the Sea of Reeds or the Red Sea.

Consider It:  While He Was Yet Young!

While Josiah was yet young he began to seek the Lord; while Caleb was but a young man he wholly followed the Lord.  While Timothy was young he knew the Scripture.  And this is the time that you too can influence your children and grandchildren the most.  So keep this in mind, redeeming the time, for truly the days are evil.
